What is Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)?
First employed in the 1970s, the term "sick building syndrome" (SBS) came about when occupants, such as employees, of large buildings experienced acute health problems and dis comforts that appeared to be linked to time spent in a particular building, but no specific illness or cause could be identified. Typically, but not always the complaints come from an office building.
Today, continued complaints come from the same scenarios. The complaints may be localized in a particular room or zone, or may be widespread throughout the building. In contrast, the term "building related illness" (BRI) is used when symptoms of diagnosable illness are identified and can be attributed directly to airborne building contaminants.
Generally, specific and nonspecific complaints are involved and typical complaints in addition to the signs and symptoms already listed, may also include eye and/or nasopharyngeal irritation, rhinitis or nasal congestion, inability to concentrate, and general malaise-complaints suggestive of a host of common ailments. The key factors are the commonality of symptoms and absence of symptoms among the building occupants when the individuals are not in the building.
What Causes Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)?
Extensive speculation about the cause or causes of SBS has been given. Poor design, maintenance, and/or the operation of the buildings ventilation system may be at fault. The ventilation system itself can be a source of irritants. Interior redesign, such as the rearrangement of offices or installation of partitions, may also interfere with efficient functioning of such systems.
