Ten Things You Should Know About Mold Removal
- Mold can create potential health risks that can lead to mold allergies as well as asthma symptoms and other respiratory problems associated with mold exposure.
- Ultimately, the best way to control indoor mold growth and control mold allergies is to control the moisture levels in the environment. Biozone UV air purifiers have been proven to eliminate mold spores as well as mold and mildew odors. This is an incredible benefit to those who suffer from mold allergies and/or Asthma.
- If mold is a problem in your home, business or school, especially black mold, you must remove the mold and eliminate sources of moisture to prevent the mold from spreading.
- If you have moisture problems, fix the source of the water or leak to prevent mold growth and control the moisture levels in the environment.
- Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60% ). Prevent mold growth by: venting bathrooms, dryers, and other moisture causing sources to the outside; using air conditioners, de-humidifiers and air purifiers; increasing ventilation; and using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing, and cleaning.
- Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
See our tips to the right on Powerzone air purifiers - ideal for cleaning and restoration purposes.
- For mold / mildew removal on hard surfaces, clean the area using warm water and detergent and dry completely. Ceiling tiles and other absorbent materials that have mold or mildew may need to be replaced.
- Prevent condensation in your home or building by adding sealants to windows, insulation to piping, exterior walls, floors and roof. This will greatly help to prevent condensation which is a direct source for mold growth.
- In areas where there is ongoing moisture potential, do not install carpeting. This type of area would include; by drinking fountains, near classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation.
- Mold can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, where moisture is prevalent. Be aware of mold sources and make sure that you are equipped with the proper air purifier for the room size for continuous mold removal and odors caused by mold and mildew.
If you have IAQ and mold issues in your school, you should get a copy of the IAQ Tools for Schools Kit. Mold is covered in the IAQ Coordinator's Guide under Appendix H - Mold and Moisture. (source EPA) |

Mold Allergies - Asthma Information
Most types of mold and mold spores that are encountered are not hazardous to healthy individuals. However, any amount of over exposure to mold can cause and aggravate conditions such as: asthma, hay fever, or other mold allergies.
The most common symptoms of overexposure to mold are:
- cough
- congestion
- runny nose
- eye irritation
- aggravation of asthma
The amount of mold you are exposed to, will determine each person’s vulnerability. More serious health effects such as fevers and breathing problems can occur but are unusual. However, mold and mildew can trigger asthma episodes in sensitive individuals with asthma. People with asthma should avoid contact with or exposure to molds...it's that simple. With the help of our technologically advanced air purification systems for mold / mildew removal you can help prevent further asthma triggers from mold and improve your asthma symptoms.

Biozone Air Purifiers Provide Mold / Mildew Removal - How?
1. ELIMINATES INDOOR AIRBORNE CONTAMINANTS →
2. PURIFIES THE AIR USING PUREWAVE® UV TECHNOLOGY →
3. BREAKS DOWN HARMFUL POLLUTANTS WITH ELECTRONIC CHARGE OF NEGATIVE IONS →
4. RELEASES CLEAN PURE AIR BACK INTO THE ROOM →
ULTIMATELY REDUCING ALLERGY AND ASTHMA SYMPTOMS!
1. Biozone Scientific air purifiers start by cleaning the air and removing contaminants like bacteria, viruses, mold and mildew, harmful fumes, as well as allergens, pollen, pet dander and other indoor elements that irritate allergy and asthma sufferers.
2. When air borne contaminants enter the Biozone air purifier they are channeled into the air purification chamber where they are immediately exposed to high intensity ultraviolet (UV) light which creates a photo chemical process that: breaks down organic contaminants, chemicals, neutralizes unhealthy gases and kills viruses.
3. Inside the air purification chamber particles such as dust and smoke are removed from the air by electrically charging them with negative ions and photo-electrons. These particles are continually broken down by the powerful ultraviolet light and oxidized so there is never a need for cleaning or changing filters.
- NO FILTERS TO CHANGE OR FILTER COSTS (just replace bulb annually)
4. Once the ultra-pure air has been purified the clean air is blown back into the room carrying with it the full power of our purifying plasma. Unlike other purifiers, harmful contaminants do not have to be brought into the purifier to be stopped. Biozone powerful purifying agents also circulate throughout an environment seeking out and destroying contaminants and unpleasant odors regardless of where they hide - leaving your home or business fresh, clean and pure - like mountain air!
Your Home and Mold
The EPA publication, "A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture, and Your Home", is available here in HTML format. This Guide provides information and guidance for homeowners and renters on mold removal, how to clean up residential mold problems and how to prevent mold growth.
How to Control Moisture in Your Home
Moisture can develop in your home from many sources. Water comes in through leaks or by seeping through basement floors. Showers and even cooking can add moisture to the air in your home. The amount of moisture that the air in your home can hold depends on the temperature of the air. As the temperature goes down, the air is able to hold less moisture. This is why, in cold weather, moisture condenses on cold surfaces like the water drops you may find on the inside of a wind, for example, drops of water that form on the inside of a window. This moisture can encourage biological pollutants to grow, like mold and mildew.
There are many ways to control moisture levels in your home:
- Fix the leaks and seepage that may be occurring in your home. To control leaks coming in from the outside, slope the ground away from the house. The lack of gutters or water flow toward the house can cause water to appear in basements. Leaks in pipes or around tubs and sinks can also provide a place for biological pollutants, like mold and mildew to grow.
- Be sure crawlspaces are well-ventilated. Put a plastic cover over dirt in crawlspaces to prevent moisture from coming in from the ground.
- Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove moisture to the outside (not into the attic). Vent your clothes dryer to the outside.
- Turn off certain appliances (such as humidifiers or kerosene heaters) if you notice moisture on windows and other surfaces.
- Use dehumidifiers and air conditioners, especially in hot, humid climates, to reduce moisture in the air, but be sure that the appliances themselves don't become sources of biological pollutants.
- Once the moisture levels are under control, use your air purifier to eliminate harmful contaminants and airborne particles that still exist in the air.
Should You Have the Air Ducts in Your Home Cleaned? - excerpt on air duct cleaning and mold removal. Please review the entire document for additional information on duct cleaning and mold / mildew removal.

We recommend our induct units to keep your air ducts clean of mold,
mildew and other biological pollutants - designed to be installed into the
ducts of any HVAC system to provide central air purification for your home, business or commercial building. |
You should consider having the air ducts in your home cleaned if:
There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system. There are several important points to understand concerning mold detection in heating and cooling systems:
- Many sections of your heating and cooling system may not be accessible for a visible inspection, so ask the service provider to show you any mold they say exists.
- You should be aware that although a substance may look like mold, a positive determination of whether it is mold or not can be made only by an expert and may require laboratory analysis for final confirmation. For about $50, some microbiology laboratories can tell you whether a sample sent to them on a clear strip of sticky household tape is mold or simply a substance that resembles it.
- If you have insulated air ducts and the insulation gets wet or moldy it cannot be effectively cleaned and should be removed and replaced.
- If the conditions causing the mold growth in the first place are not corrected, mold growth will recur.
Floods & Flooding Cause Mold Problems
Mold growth may be a serious problem after flooding. EPA's Fact Sheet: Flood Cleanup: Avoiding Indoor Air Quality Problems - discusses steps to take when cleaning and repairing a home after flooding. Excess moisture in the home is cause for concern about indoor air quality primarily because it provides breeding conditions for microorganisms which can lead to dangerous mold and black mold. This fact sheet provides tips to avoid creating indoor air quality problems during cleanup. U.S. EPA, EPA Document Number 402-F-93-005, August 1993.
